GESALO Business & Event News

Dear Partners and Friends,

only two handfuls of days left until the 3rd Saudi-German Startup Competition – did you register already for this event? Eleven Saudi startups compete for the prestigious award. The two winners will be flown to Munich in September 2019 for attending ‘Bits & Pretzels’, a three-day conference and festival that gathers 5,000 founders, investors & startup enthusiasts – the biggest of its kind in Europe!
By the way, the competition takes place in Jeddah not for fleeing the dry heat of Riyadh – we do so commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Lufthansa connecting Jeddah with Frankfurt.
Hence, many good reasons for joining us in Jeddah.

July will also see two more meetings of the German Business Circle, on the 7th in Dammam and on the 8th in Jeddah.

Please contact Samir Naji and Jan Müller in case you are free to attend.
Hope seeing you there!

With best regards from Riyadh,
Oliver Oehms

International Consulting Day & transport logistic trade fair visit

Mr. Mueller meeting Mr. Rami Ibrahim Alnajjar, Senior Advisor, Deputy Minister of Planning & Information, Saudi Logistics HUB, Mr. Abdulaziz A. Alrayes, Director of Corporate Communications & Marketing, Mr. Alaa Matuq Alsufyani, Strategic Initiative Management Specialist of GACA and representatives of SAGIA.

International Consulting Day 2019 – Stuttgart

The “Internationaler Beratungstag” (IBT) is an annual consulting day of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Stuttgart Region, which offers the opportunity to meet with experts of different German Chambers of Commerce Abroad. The German Chambers of Commerce Abroad advise, support and represent German companies worldwide that wish to develop or expand their business activities abroad. The AHKs are institutions of German foreign trade promotion. The AHKs represent German business interests in 140 locations in 92 countries.

In 30 minutes slots you can book talks with country experts to discuss and exchange about the potential and chances of over 50 different markets and raise specific questions about the foreign business. The experts give their expertise and might like to offer different services for market entry such as general consulting, market research, business partner search, mediation or legal support.

Mr. Jan Lutz Mueller who represented us in this event had 6 appointments with local small & medium sized German companies and offered them our services.

transport logistic

From the 4th – 7th of June 2019 the largest logistic fair in the world was held in Munich with more than 2,374 exhibitors from 63 countries and round about 64,000 visitors from 125 countries. The exhibition takes place every 2 years and is a key event for the global logistics industry. It combines innovative products, technologies and systems with pooled expertise.
Top topics of this year’s gathering were the driver shortage, silk road and artificial intelligence.

In the frame of the Saudi Vision 2030 and the vision program National Industrial Development and Logistics Services Program (NIDLP) the logistics sector is receiving a greater attention
and importance. In order to have a wider diversity, the Saudi government formed a new entity, the Saudi Logistic HUB, which unites different ministries and authorities which are active in the transportation sector like the Ministry of Transport (MoT), Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA), Saudi Ports Authority (MAWANI), Saudi Railway Company (SAR), Saudi Export Development Authority (Saudi Exports), Saudi Customs Saudi Electronic Info Exchange Co. (Tabadul), The Saudi Industrial Development Fund (SIDF) and Public Transport Authority.

During the exhibition Mr. Jan Lutz Mueller, Deputy Delegate of the German Industry and Commerce for Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Yemen, visited the different booths from
Saudi Arabia and met with Mr. Rami Ibrahim Alnajjar, Senior Advisor for the Deputy Minister
of Planning & Information, Saudi Logistics HUB, Mr. Abdulaziz A. Alrayes, Director of Corporate Communications & Marketing, Mr. Alaa Matuq Alsufyani, Strategic Initiative Management Specialist of GACA and representatives of SAGIA.

The Saudi participation was coordinated as well by the Saudi Center for International Strategic Development (SCISP), represented by Mr. Adel Ali Alkhodairy, Director of Strategic Partnerships & Business Development.

Update: SASO Plastic Regulation

The 2nd and 3rd phase of the SASO Plastic Regulation

There has been an update regarding the regulation of plastic imported into the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. We now know that the second and third phase of the planned legislation – which will ban the import of non-oxo-biodegradable plastics – have been until the first of April 2020.

We suspect that the reason for this is the decision of the European Union (05.06.19) which banned the use of oxo-biodegradable plastic. The reasoning for this is said to be the fact that these plastics are not as ecologically safe as they seem, instead adding a quantity of microplastics into the environment which is harmful.

The EU has also forwarded this information, including the results of a European study which supports these claims, to the Saudi government via a note verbale. We hope that this will positively influence the decision of the SASO to not go ahead with said regulation. An important factor in this decision is the result of a local study, which is being completed at the moment and will hopefully be released by the end of June.

The result of this study will likely impact the SASO. Since the usage of oxo-biodegradable plastic would negatively impact the necessity of plastic-recycling, the Saudi Arabian recycling lobby is also trying to sway the decision to avoid any impact on their operations.

We, as the German economic representative in the country, are staying in regular contact with the relevant bodies to help avoid the logistical challenge of such regulation on the import industry and provide the most up-to-date information to the business community.

Business Circle
@Riyadh Development Authority

Getting an exclusive insight into the upcoming Giga Projects in Riyadh
The German Business Circle of 23rd June 2019 took place at the Giga Projects Exposition by Riyadh Development Authority.

In March 2019 King Salman bin Abdulaziz launched four big wellbeing programs aimed at transforming Riyadh and improving the life of its citizens.
The four wellbeing projects King Salman Park, Sports Boulevard, Green Riyadh and Riyadh Art will complement the Saudi Vision 2030 and are aligned with the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals. As these projects are being developed with a government investment of US$23 billion, the four projects will offer opportunities worth US$15 billion for the private sector and thus offer considerable possibilities for German companies to get involved and prove their know-how.

The approx. 40 participants of this Business Circle were treated to presentations by the project managers of King Salman Park, Sports Boulevard, Green Riyadh and Riyadh Art.

King Salman Park is planned to spread over 13.4 square kilometers in the heart of Riyadh and aims to be the largest city park in the world, encompassing (among other) a royal arts complex, theaters, museums, cinemas, sports venues and a royal golf course.

Green Riyadh will increase the city’s green cover from 1.5 percent to 9.1% by planting 7.5 million trees (one tree per inhabitant!). This measure will be enabled by treating more than 1 million cubic meters of sewage water and using it for irrigation. The project claims to improve the ambient temperature by 2 degrees Celsius and to lower air pollution.

The third project is the Sports Boulevard that will feature a 135km long cycling track and add 3.5 Million square meters of new open spaces and sports facilities across the city.

The fourth project, Riyadh Art will establish the city as “a gallery without walls” through a world-class interactive public arts program and an annual arts festival.

The participants were able to get an exclusive insight into these new developments and had the chance to raise their questions to the respective project managers. A big thank you goes to Faddy Sadideen and his team for the excellent collaboration on this event.
