GESALO-Business & Event News

Dear Partners and Friends,
Hard to believe – the year 2019 is only eight weeks ‘old’ - how much has happened in these two months in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia! The festive inauguration of King Abdullah Port followed the launch of the National Industrial Development and Logistics Program (NIDLP), which will trigger numerous business opportunities over a series of years. GESALO hosted three incoming German business delegations already, and our sister organization Ghorfa (Arab-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Berlin) just featured a fourth one touching ground in Bahrain. On top, the (re-) opening of our German Desk in Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry is making progress.
Watch out for more to come!

With best regards from Riyadh,
Oliver Oehms

Inauguration: King Abdullah Port

Saudi Arabia moved one step closer to its goal of becoming a global logistics hub with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s launch of the King Abdullah Port in Rabigh on Feburary 11, 2019.
The port, part of King Abdullah Economic City, will make the Kingdom “a linking point of three continents, Asia, Europe and Africa,” the crown prince said at the launch.
King Abdullah Port, the fastest-growing container port in the world, is considered a major success story in the Kingdom’s efforts to develop public-private sector partnerships. The port’s aim of positioning Saudi Arabia as a global logistics hub is in line with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 economic reforms.

An important contributor to the construction and the development of the port was the German-owned and Jeddah-based firm Huta Marine Works Ltd. Hence, it is fair to say that the celebration marked also an important milestone of the Huta Managing Director’s work in the Kingdom, Michael Wübbens.

The port features state-of-the-art facilities including 18-meter water berths, which are the deepest in the world, and the world’s largest and most advanced cranes (provided by German company Liebherr), which employ the latest technology and feature a 65-ton lifting capacity as well as a handling capacity of 25 containers. Such facilities enable the port to serve giant container vessels now and in the future.
